Ragdoll, calm and affectionate cat

It was in Ann Baker, breeder of Persian cats in Riverside in California, that we owe the creation of the Ragdoll race in the early 1960s. She obtained it by crossing an Angora Persian pussy and a sacred cat of Burma, thus giving birth to a companion with exceptional sweetness. Ann Baker gave him the name of Ragdoll, which literally means "cloth doll".

Origins and History

She then recorded several of her Ragdolls cats at the National Cat Fanciers ’Association. Ann Baker has also sold representatives of the new Féline breed to Denny Dayton and his wife Laura. The couple also occupies a fundamental place in the development of RAGDOLL, which he continued to ensure within his famous Blossom Time farm until the 1980s, while distanced himself from Ann Baker.
Very popular in the United States, RAGDOLL began to be recognized by various major American feline bodies during the 1970s, notably the TICA (The International Cat Association). The first exports then took place, first in the United Kingdom, then elsewhere in Europe, especially in France from 1986. This is the date on which Noëlle Vialatte (cattery of Gailand in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques) brought in the first French Ragdolls: Barfield and Blossom of Patriarca. They generated a first range 2 years later. Consequently, the RAGDOLL gradually gained popularity in France, the LOOF (Official Book of Feline origins) having identified more than 2,700 recordings in 2019, against 76 in 2003.
Physical characteristics
Character and behavior
The sweetness of Ragdoll is one of its main character traits. This cat does not clear or manifest any form of aggressiveness. He is also known for his extreme patience, which makes him an ideal companion for children. Very calm and discreet, he constantly seeks tranquility and does not like bustle. He does not appreciate loneliness either and spends most of his time with his master. With regard to the latter, he is very affectionate. He likes to be cuddled, staying on his lap and even being caught in his arms. RAGDOLL is essentially an interior cat, preferring peace of mind, comfort and safety of the home with external tumult.
Living conditions
RAGDOLL is characterized by overall solid health, but the breed can be affected by two diseases which relate to many other feline varieties: HCM and PKD. HCM, or hypertrophic myocardiopathy (hypertrophic cardio-myopathy), is a cardiac pathology that affects gutter cats as much as those with pedigree. The most affected individuals are young adults (about 2 years old). It gives rise to symptoms of acute congestive heart failure: pulmonary edema, pleural effusion, arrhythmia ... There is a DNA screening test for HCM.
The PKD (renal polycystosis - Polykystic Kidney Disease) is a kidney disease. It corresponds to the formation of more or less numerous cysts in the kidneys, leading to renal failure. There are also DNA screening tests for this disease.
Food
Because it is less active than many other cats, RAGDOLL can be subject to overweight. This means that its diet must be adapted by avoiding bringing it too much carbohydrates and fat. It is therefore better to provide him with high -end kibbles, offering it quality proteins and a full and balanced range of nutrients. In addition, this dry food form will help him maintain his teeth. The cat must also have fresh and regularly renewed water, at will.
Nutritional need
RAGDOLL has specific nutritional needs to maintain optimal health:
- Quality proteins: Essential for muscle development and general health. Opt for protein sources such as chicken, fish or lamb.
- Healthy fats: Provide energy and contribute to healthy skin and coat. Omega-3 and omega-6 are particularly beneficial.
- Fibers: Help digestion and maintain good intestinal health. Warm vegetables and grains are good sources of fiber.
- Vitamins and minerals: A balanced diet must include vitamins and minerals to support the immune system and general cat health.
It is important to consult a veterinarian for personalized advice on the diet of your RAGDOLL.

Maintenance and hygiene

Having a medium-length-length hair and a sub-point with moderate density, Ragdoll is not a cat with tedious maintenance. The brushing regularly ensures the beauty and cleanliness of your coat and the good health of your skin. Besides, Ragdoll does not go out a lot and therefore has the opportunity to get dirty.
The brushing of RAGDOLL is to be carried out once or twice a week to help him get rid of his dead hairs, and thus to prevent the latter from being found in large numbers in his intestine and form trichobézoards. It is advisable, during brushing, to insist on the zone of the "pants", formed by part of the subwoofer of the cat. The hair in this part of the cat's body is generally more dense and more supplied. Ragdoll may also need to take a bath from time to time. Dental care is essential to prevent periodontal disease caused by tartar, as is the regular cutting of claws since it only uses them very slowly.
Ragdoll has a life expectancy from 12 to 17 years old.
Price and budget
The purchase price of a RAGDOLL is between € 600 and € 2500. The annual maintenance cost varies between € 500 and € 800.
